Mojang and Bethesba trademark dispute over the upcoming Mojang Game “Scrolls” is settled. Bethesba owns the trademark “Scrolls” but, Mojang will be allowed to use it.

Notch gives fireside chat and answers a few questions.

The dispute between Bethesda and Mojang is finally over.

Scrolls

The long running lawsuit filed by Bethesba against Mojang was reported settle this morning by Mojang founder Markus Perrson.

The lawsuit filed in early August of 2011, accused Mojang use of the name “Scrolls” was copyright infringement and would confuse customers between Mojang’s game and Bethesda’s long running action RPG series “Elder Scrolls”.

“The settlement is that we give them the trademark, get to keep the name, and won’t make an Elder Scrolls competitor using the name,” Persson said in a mid-day tweet.

Notch had originally suggested to settle out of court by releasing the trademark to Bethesda, but was declined. He later came up with a more interesting alternative that was also declined.

According to the official statement regarding the lawsuit posted on Mojang’s homepage indicates that control over the trademark was not the purpose of the lawsuit. “For us this was never about a trade mark but being able to use Scrolls as the name of our game which we can – Yey.”

Notch’s fireside chat: piracy, women, and hidden recipes

Image

Things have been pretty quiet this week at Mojang while a majority of their staff attends the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. Mojang has earned itself quite a bit of prestige during the week long event winning several awards mostly involving Minecraft.

Notch also gave a fireside to talk about Minecraft as well as some other things that have been on his mind.

Since the release of Minecraft there has been a call for female characters. With the recent introduction to mating of animals  and villagers pairing off the questions has been raised again, where are the girls? In the past Notch has noted that the characters in the game are gender neutral and have characteristics of both male and female. He did however admit that since the beginning he has viewed the characters as male. “We attribute blocks to masculinity, guys are more square.” Notch says that females have more curves and to add one would require making a more rounded model.

Notch also took the opportunity to talk about online piracy. It is well known through out the community that Notch is not one for heavy handed control of intellectual properties. Having been active against the anti-piracy legislation known as SOPA, Notch is well known for the desire to have a free internet. In regards to Piracy notch said,”I still think piracy is wrong, but the level of wrong me calling my friend an idiot. It’s wrong but it’s such a minor thing.”

Notch has firmly stated repeatedly that the best way to end piracy is to convert pirates into paying customers through respect. Putting the burden of piracy back on the game companies Notch said, “If a lost sale is so bad, should bad reviews be illegal? What about missed release dates?”

While talking about creating an intimate community of players Notch also eluded that people may be missing a crafted recipe or two. No doubt there will be many long hours spent tonight trying to find out what it might be.

Minecraft 1.2 is here!

Mojang rolled out the latest patch for Minecraft this morning and it looks great! A new biome, smarter mobs, giant robots, and cats, are just a few of the new changes.
Love creative mode? If you do this patch is as good as it gets. ANVIL has arrived raising the height limit to 256 blocks. Some brand new creations await you, and because ANVIL is retroactive you can go back to your old works of art and take them to a whole new level.

If you’re a fan of survival mode check out the new jungle biome and see if you can’t find an ocelots to tame. If your feeling really brave turn on hard mode and see how long it takes before zombies break in for a snack.

For the conspiracy theory folks, there is a patch note again noting the removal of the fabled  Herobrine. There was no Herobrine data in Minecraft 1.1’s jar file it is safe to assume that the Mojang team is just playing more dirty tricks.

The official patch notes from Mojang are posted below:

+ New jungle biome
+ Added ocelots
+ Added cats
+ Added iron golems
+ New AI for mobs
+ Tame wolves can have puppies
+ Villagers will have children if there is room in their village
+ Added rare drops for mobs
+ New items and blocks
* New map height limit (256 instead of 128)
* Doors have been updated so that double-doors work better with redstone
* Many other minor tweaks and fixes
– Removed Herobrine

Edit: We are actually in 1.2.2. In an early morning tweet Jens explained the need for the updated patch, “Updated Minecraft to 1.2.2 because birches and pine trees were missing. Birches love pine trees.”
